In this editorial design project, I was asked to pick a speech and design a book for the transcript. I chose former NC State basketball coach, Jimmy Valvano’s, acceptance speech of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPYS. The terminally ill Jimmy V used the platform to announce the establishment of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. He passed one one month later, but his legacy has been immortalized in the 11 impactful and inspirational minutes of this speech. I printed this project during the 2019 V Week, The V Foundation’s annual fundraising push week.
Throughout the project, I aimed to style it after what could have been his “playbook” for a successful and fulfilling life. To accomplish this, I used a CINTIQ tablet to hand-draw over the spreads in a "note-taking" manner. I also drew in the “V” in each of the largest callouts, alluding to the V Foundation’s founding in his speech.
His speech not only marks the founding one of the most prominent cancer research foundations but also serves as a way for him to pass on final words of wisdom. Most of his advice comes in series of 3s. I supported this theme by sequencing images in 3 frames, captioning those images them, exclusively, with 3 line captions, and creating some mock “plays” that represent the pieces of advice.
